Quality Landscaping Service: Full-Sun Perennials for an All-Year Garden

Perennials for an All-Year Garden: Full-Sunny Plants

Your sun-drenched garden is the best place for full-sun perennials — no garden maintenance is required! Plants aren’t actually “full sun”; they need from 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day — not 12, let alone 24. Unlike annuals which have only a one-year life, perennials live at least 2 years if not longer. Looking for sun-worshiping perennials to plant in your year-round garden? Here is a list of our favorites and we likely suggest our quality landscaping service.

Taro

If you don’t know the plant called taro, you may have been introduced to it under its other common name: elephant ears. These tropical plants with large, gorgeous leaves are tuberous, frost-sensitive perennials native to tropical Asia. They have plenty of drama because their “elephant ear” leaves can get up to three feet long on tall stems. They bear no flowers, but the leaf color goes from lime green to almost black and is more than sufficient beauty for anything. While taro is mainly grown for decorative purposes throughout much of the country, it’s an edible food crop in Hawaii and parts of Southeast Asia where they use it to make poi.

Lamb’s Ear

The charming common name belongs to a herbaceous perennial plant, featuring ultra-soft, velvety green foliage you can’t help but pet. The silvery gray leaves quickly create a low-growing evergreen ground cover typically about 12 to 18 inches tall, and the foliage gives off a pleasant smell when crushed. In summer, small purple flowers bloom, attracting butterflies and pollinators.

Rose Mallow

Rose mallow is a hearty, perennial hibiscus that has an extensive bloom time — July through September. Flowers are dramatic and big, sometimes larger than dinner plates, and are white or pink. Each rose mallow flower lives only a few days, although they open more quickly one after another.

Dahlia

This sun-worshiping perennial will brighten your garden with bold, beautiful flowers from midsummer to autumn. Dahlia is a tuberous-rooted genus of herbaceous perennial plants. Dahlias come in around 60,000 named varieties. You’ll find everything from little mini flower balls the size of lollipops to enormous 15-inch flower balls in a large variety of colors. Some species can reach 5 feet high.
